RBS: rumored plans to exit Tesco JV may be ill advised

RBS's recent ventures, including its partner acquisition of ABN Amro, seem to have left it with a shortage of cash that not even a GBP12 billion rights issue will cover. RBS hopes to make an additional GBP4 billion from the sale of its insurance units, and is even rumored to be selling its share in Tesco Personal Finance. However, given the strength of this business, the move has to be questioned.

Australia's largest property and casualty insurer, QBE Insurance Group, has launched a bid to take over Insurance Australia Group, the country's largest motor and home insurer. The prospective acquisition is set to deliver economic synergies for the combined entity, and comes at a time when IAG's stock price has been battered.

Fortis: to enhance its SME offering
Fortis has announced plans to raise the level of cover available under its Commercial Guard products in its ongoing bid to target the SME market. Among other changes, it will add computer breakdown cover and legal expenses as standard across the range. With direct channel competition growing, Fortis has chosen product differentiation as a means to grow its share in the SME commercial lines market.
